ENERGY CONSUMPTION
The Philippines is the second largest producer of geothermal power in the world after the United States, and geothermal power accounts for about 50 percent of domestic power generation, followed by hydropower, which accounts for about 33 percent.
Here in General Santos City (Mindanao) electricity is solely provided by SOCOTECO II (South Cotabato II Electric Cooperative, Inc). This covers the areas in SOCCSKSARGEN areas of GenSan, South Cotabato, Cotabato and Sarangani.
Our teacher said, Gensan is very lucky since SOCOTECO II is the less in payments. He gave us a sample of electric bill of 2012 and 2014 in order to compare how big the payment is that we're paying.
2012:
KWH used = 237 Current bill = P2,595.23
CALCULATION:
= Bill = P 2,595.23 = 10.87
KWH 237
2014:
KWH used = 293 Current bill = P3,186.05
CALCULATION:
= Bill = P 3,186.05 = 10.95
KWH 293
TIPS ON HOW TO SAVE ELECTRICITY AT HOME:
Do you know why it's so important to save electricity at your house? It's because electric companies often produce electricity by burning fossil fuels such as coal, oil, and natural gas. The burning of fossil fuels contributes to global warming and pollutes the air.
Saving electricity at home has become increasingly important in recent years. Using electricity without regard to conserving energy contributes to global warming and leads to massive electricity bills. Choosing your appliances wisely, being mindful of your energy consumption habits, and getting creative with household chores can help save money and give you the peace of mind that comes with knowing you're doing your part to reduce strain on the environment. Here are some tips to save electricity at home:
-
Monitor your fridge's thermostat. Lower the fridge's thermostat if it's not using.
-
Use Compact Flourescent Lamps since this lasts longer and use lesser power than incandescent lamp.
-
Unplug appliances if it's not using.
-
Check the wattage of your appliances to monitor the usage of it.
-
Iron is one of the appliances that consumes big electricity. Iron those clothes that are important to iron only and set an schedule in ironing your clothes maybe once or twice a week.
Summer Tips:
-
Keep your blinds, drapes or shades closed during the day.
-
Use ceiling fans or windows fans instead of air conditioning. Ceiling and window fans use much less electricity.
-
Only use air conditioning when it is really hot outside.
-
Turn off your air conditioning if you will be gone from home for a long time.
-
Clean or replace your air conditioning filters every month (in both central and window air conditioners). Turn the thermostat up a few degrees when you have the air conditioning on.
-
Plant trees in your yard because they help shade your house in the summer and keep your house cooler.
-
If you can, shade your air conditioning unit. If your unit is in the bright sun, it will use up to 5% more energy than if it was in the shade.
